Also, they probably have better records of sales and can see how well certain things sell when compared to others. Sure, they might be able to do the same if they focused on another faction, but that's a huge risk so they haven't done it yet. I'm pretty sure they always make Marine releases alongside others because it offsets any possible losses from the other release. Some people like Orks, some people like Tyranids, some people like Necrons, but within those 3 groups, more of them probably like Space Marines than like the other 2. Not just because they're powerful, but because they're appealing to almost everyone. It's a good starter army but they also have solid lore and models. Most people have a Marines army alongside their other one, even if they don't play it. People complain about Space Marines in 40k getting all the love, but a huge reason for that is that they're really popular. Some people who are fans of certain factions are more likely to actually buy them. However, myself and another friend loved Space Marines and Imperial Guard and we each had armies. I knew loads of people who loved Skaven and thought they were great, but none of them owned any units. Chaos Dwarfs were Forgeworld (£££££££) but there's more to it. There's a mix of competitive viability but also people saying they love a faction versus the people actually buying the units.īut that's also affected by pricing etc.
